Case study: English In Action

Adhyayan have recently been recruited by the Open University (OU) to provide consultative services to EIA. Our Executive Director, Kavita Anand, and Director, Spokey Wheeler have contributed their unique expertise in Leadership and Management to develop new headteacher Leadership modules for the EIA programme.

Leadership and Management and Collaboration with Adhyayan

After a successful pilot phase EIA are now focussing on how they can extend their services to an increased number of schools and target the wider community in Bangladesh over the next seven years. Scale-up is arguably the most difficult stage of any programmes’ development. Strong Leadership and Management skills among EIA stakeholders will be crucial to the success of any scale-up.

The headteacher’s leadership is the single most significant factor in a school’s achievement. Yet to this date most headteachers have had a limited role in the functioning of EIA. The Teachers engaged in EIA receive rigorous ongoing support from the project alongside professional development (PD) materials; however the role of the headteacher is ensuring the success of the programme has received very little attention.

The role of TFs (Teacher Facilitators) and CTs (Core Trainers) to enable cluster headteachers to lead EIA is crucial to the next phase of the EIA programme. The Leadership and Management materials developed jointly by Adhyayan experts and EIA CTs have focussed on improving headteachers’ understanding of EIA and ways in which they can positively contribute to its success. This development process involved a 3 week collaborative writing workshop which took place in Mumbai and Dhaka.
