The Adhyayan standard of Educational Excellence

Adhyayan is an education movement of Indian and international educators committed to improve the quality of teaching, learning and educational leadership. For this reason we have launched ‘The Adhyayan Standard of Educational Excellence’ to provide for possibly the first time in India a robust, internationally credible quality standard.

The Adhyayan Quality Standard, once awarded, is valid for two years. It is tiered according to whether the school is seeking an International, National, State or Local award. All schools are evaluated with the same rigor as the international standard and use the same criteria. The tier differentiator is in the escalating expectation of school performance against the 6 key performance areas.

1. International: This assessment is for schools and school networks against International Board standards such as the IGCSE and the IB. Typically its audience includes Premier International and national Indian schools.

2. National: This assessment is for schools and school networks against Nation-wide Board standards such as the CBSE and the ICSE. Typically its audience includes high-end traditional, aided, alternative and government schools and donor endowed NGOs.

3. State: This assessment is for schools and school networks against State-wide Board standards such as the SSC. Typically its audience includes low-end traditional, aided, alternative and government schools and donor endowed NGOs.

4. Local: This assessment is for schools and school networks against local standards. Typically its audience includes NGO run non-government schools, which serve children with multiple disadvantages and have teachers with very basic teaching qualifications.

The Quality standard, borne out of our school self review diagnostic, provides reliable external validation which enables schools to gauge their own effectiveness to assist them on their school improvement journey. The Standard has been custom-designed for the Indian context and enables schools from those serving India’s most privileged children to the poorest rural state schools in which children suffer multiple disadvantage, to gauge their effectiveness against international and Indian standards.

We are dedicated to working with, and increasing the numbers of schools and networks whose leaders are committed to creating rich learning communities in which their students achieve the highest possible performance and are prepared for both learning and life. To accelerate the access of schools to regional best practice this year we are setting up a network of 100 Advocacy schools across India which are committed to excellence and which share our vision and values. We believe that by partnering with such schools we will enable the quality movement, which is just beginning in India, to take root and flourish through the sharing of best practice across the country.
